In the darkest times of the COVID-19 pandemic last year, small businesses hungry for customers needed cash to survive.

Many have appealed to the Federal Wage Protection Program, or PPP, which has allocated billions of dollars in forgivable loans, including millions of dollars to hundreds of small businesses in El Paso.

But many El Paso businesses either couldn’t tap into P3 loans, especially when the program started last spring, or needed extra money to top up federal aid. So the city and county used some of the millions of federal stimulus dollars they received to provide small grants and broadly targeted loans for smaller small businesses.

Some grants and loans were made in April, but most of the funds were allocated from August to December.

A total of 1,653 grants and 36 loans totaling $ 19.9 million have been made to small businesses in El Paso through COVID-19-related financial assistance programs administered by five non-profit agencies, show city ​​and county data obtained by the El Paso Times via open case requests.

Most of the money went to small grants of under $ 1,000 to $ 50,000. The county also provided money for 36 loans ranging from $ 5,000 to $ 25,000.
