Mohawk Group, a leading producer and distributor of commercial rugs and hard flooring, is committed to making the return journey more meaningful by finding innovative ways to give back to the planet and people with its most recent initiative, The Waterways Project, a partnership that will help balance approximately 8 million gallons of water across U.S. rivers.

With The Waterways Project, the Mohawk Group is creating a greater impact on the community and the environment by focusing on river systems. Through new products, technologies and initiatives, Mohawk Group strives to improve understanding of the health of rivers and how rivers support life.

But why the rivers?

Rivers are an important part of life and we need them to survive. The health of rivers can have a huge impact on the ecosystem and surrounding communities. Rivers are our main source of drinking water and their economic, environmental and even aesthetic or spiritual value affects each of us. Rivers face many challenges, including evaporation from water sources, mortality of wildlife, worsening droughts, intensifying storms and extreme flooding. The profound effects of climate change are wreaking havoc on our freshwater systems, threatening every person and every ecosystem. Healthy rivers are one of our best defenses.

Conservation and policy solutions are important and necessary to ensure that rivers can continue to provide us with clean water, protect our communities from flooding, and provide refuge for fish and wildlife, as climate change makes ecosystems hotter and drier. To this end, the Mohawk Group has partnered with two organizations, the Waterkeeper Alliance and Change the Course, to help communities across North America restore and protect our river ecosystems.

Waterkeeper Alliance is the largest and fastest growing nonprofit organization. Mohawk Group supports the Alliance’s global work by donating funds and volunteering hundreds of hours to clean up rivers in the United States.

Change the Course funds a range of water stewardship projects and builds a self-sustaining cycle of community education, ecosystem restoration, and ongoing conservation of river systems in North America. For all flooring products purchased from the Waterways Project collections, Mohawk Group will restore approximately 8 million gallons of water to help customers make lasting contributions to the health of rivers and communities in America.

Measurable data is also the only way to observe and analyze the long-term environmental, cultural and societal impact that extends beyond our own lives and those of our businesses. The Mohawk team used data sets from environmental water studies to create biophilic models, turning raw numbers into beautiful art. Data sets from independent studies at Duke University and the United Nations Panel on Climate Change were entered into data visualization software and used to create patterns for the carpet planks.

For example, Data Tide, a beautiful gray and blue pattern, is a visual graphic representation of rivers and estuaries. Estuaries support biodiversity, protect coastal areas, filter pollution from our waters and have the incredible ability to sequester carbon.
